Understanding Attendance

A national research project led by social enterprise, ImpactEd.

Discovering the barriers to school attendance and the strategies you can put in place to improve outcomes for all your children.

This academic year, 27.8% of secondary school students and 19.7% of primary school pupils are identified as persistently absent.*

Strategies that have worked in the past to address attendance are not working as well. We want to help school leaders understand why, and identify the approaches that work best in their setting.

Measures to tackle poor attendance

Tracking the reasons for varying attendance rates is complex and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach.

We have analysed the most recent research and worked with our partner schools to develop a package of pupil-facing measures designed to assess a variety of drivers behind poor attendance.

Psychological Sense of School Involvement

Children who feel they belong in school are more likely to have successful school experiences and increased levels of engagement and motivation

(UCL, IOE, 2020)

School

Engagement

Higher levels of behavioural, emotional, and cognitive engagement with school are associated with greater academic performance and improved attendance (NRC, 2004)

Safety in

School

Feeling unsafe in school is a key driver of low school attendance

(Youth Endowment Fund, 2022)

Pupil

Wellbeing

Wellbeing is associated with a range of positive outcomes, including improved academic performance

(NRC, 2004)

By taking part in the Understanding Attendance project, you will be able to:

  • Use a pupil-facing diagnostic to understand the underlying drivers of challenges with pupil absence, benchmarked to national averages through live reports

  • Analyse your results across sub-groups (e.g. Pupil Premium or SEND) and by individual pupils, tracking trends over time through live reporting from the ImpactEd platform

  • Gain a clear understanding of the interventions and strategies you can put in place to positively impact attendance rates in your school - and then evaluate their impact

  • Easily identify pupils most likely to present issues with attendance, in the future.

“Our partnership has helped us focus our effort on which aspects of our practice work best - so we can do those more and less of what doesn't. This has had an impact on the lives of over 5,000 disadvantaged pupils across our Trust.”

“Our partnership has helped us focus our effort on which aspects of our practice work best - so we can do those more and less of what doesn't. This has had an impact on the lives of over 5,000 disadvantaged pupils across our Trust.”

In a recent survey, 85% of our school partners agreed or strongly agreed the partnership had helped them gain a deeper understanding of pupil experience at their school.
